Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) regulations are anticipated to become law in the Sultanate in the near future and many employment opportunities are becoming available within industrial and commercial organizations in the field of health, safety and environmental management. It can be predicted, in relation to the Sultanate alone, that job opportunities will increase sharply and in the GCC region generally, HSE is having an increasing effect on business, commerce and industry as the region begins to focus on improving safety management. The demand is for well qualified, knowledgeable HSE professionals, and the aim of this course is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to meet this demand and take advantage of the many job opportunities which will become available.

Students are provided with a broad and rigorous programme of vocationally relevant and applied study in the fields of occupational health, safety management and environmental management. Through the programme, students’ intellectual development and their familiarity with the needs of commerce, industry and public services is enhanced and extended in order to produce competent and resourceful individuals able to arrive at HSE solutions to technological, organisational and managerial problems.

Effective health, safety and environmental management requires competent, knowledgeable and experienced professionals, capable of taking on a range of responsibilities from risk assessment to advising on health and safety policy. In addition to good general management skills, effective health, safety and environmental management requires a degree of knowledge across the broad spectrum of disciplines which are to be found within this programme. Typical sectors covered by HSEM professional are: Oil and Gas, Manufacturing, Electronics/telecoms, Pharmaceuticals, Food and drink, Retail, Supply chain/distribution, MOD & Defence, Public Sector and Consultancy

Subjects covered in this four year programme are related to HSE science and technology, fire safety and inspection, safety in oil and gas fields, national and international legislation in HSE, risk assessment and management, concepts and techniques in environmental hazard management and disaster response planning, environmental impact assessment and sustainable development.

Students who exit the programme after successfully completing the first year will be awarded, by the University of Central Lancashire, a Certificate of Higher Education in Health, Safety and Environmental Management, the second year a Diploma of Higher Education in Health, Safety and Environmental Management, and the third year a Bachelor Degree* (equivalent to an “Advanced Diploma” in Health, Safety and Environmental Management in Oman)

The level of education provided by the course is appropriate to those who will eventually hold senior positions within commerce, public service or industry. Throughout the course emphasis is placed on self-motivation, independent critical thinking, analytical depth and practical application. The aims of the course are:

An optional work placement period with a host company in a health, safety or environment related role allows students an opportunity to further apply and consolidate their knowledge. Successful completion of this period leads to a Certificate or Diploma of Higher Education that states ‘…..with Industrial Placement’.

Completion of the course will allow you to enter the health, safety and environmental management professions with excellent career prospects, and will also open up many other career options in other industry, commerce or public service. These Degree courses in Fire Safety are concerned with the study of fire, its development and prevention, and the means by which its consequences may be reduced to a minimum in human, environmental and financial terms.

Students are provided with a broad and rigorous programme of vocationally relevant and applied study in the fields of Fire Safety Engineering and Management. Through the programme, students’ intellectual development and their familiarity with the industry is enhanced and extended in order to produce competent and resourceful individuals able to arrive at fire safety solutions to engineering, technological, organisational and managerial problems.

Fire Safety Engineering is for students who wish to be involved in the design of fire safety solutions through the application of prevailing knowledge and proven techniques. Fire engineering is a field which explores the various possibilities of preventing fires. It can be defined as the art and science of designing buildings and facilities for life safety and property protection in the event of an unwanted fire. This includes the application of scientific and engineering principles, based on an understanding of the phenomena and effects of fire and of reaction and behaviour of people, property and the environment as well as the impact of fire protection systems including detection, alarm and active fire protection systems.

The full time programme consists of 6 modules studied each year.
