Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) regulations are anticipated to become law in the Sultanate in the near future and many employment opportunities are becoming available within industrial and commercial organizations in the field of health, safety and environmental management. It can be predicted, in relation to the Sultanate alone, that job opportunities will increase sharply and in the GCC region generally, HSE is having an increasing effect on business, commerce and industry as the region begins to focus on improving safety management. The demand is for well qualified, knowledgeable HSE professionals, and the aim of this course is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to meet this demand and take advantage of the many job opportunities which will become available.

Students are provided with a broad and rigorous programme of vocationally relevant and applied study in the fields of occupational health, safety management and environmental management. Through the programme, students’ intellectual development and their familiarity with the needs of commerce, industry and public services is enhanced and extended in order to produce competent and resourceful individuals able to arrive at HSE solutions to technological, organisational and managerial problems.

Effective health, safety and environmental management requires competent, knowledgeable and experienced professionals, capable of taking on a range of responsibilities from risk assessment to advising on health and safety policy. In addition to good general management skills, effective health, safety and environmental management requires a degree of knowledge across the broad spectrum of disciplines which are to be found within this programme. Typical sectors covered by HSEM professional are: Oil and Gas, Manufacturing, Electronics/telecoms, Pharmaceuticals, Food and drink, Retail, Supply chain/distribution, MOD & Defence, Public Sector and Consultancy

Subjects covered in this four year programme are related to HSE science and technology, fire safety and inspection, safety in oil and gas fields, national and international legislation in HSE, risk assessment and management, concepts and techniques in environmental hazard management and disaster response planning, environmental impact assessment and sustainable development.

Students who exit the programme after successfully completing the first year will be awarded, by the University of Central Lancashire, a Certificate of Higher Education in Health, Safety and Environmental Management, the second year a Diploma of Higher Education in Health, Safety and Environmental Management, and the third year a Bachelor Degree* (equivalent to an “Advanced Diploma” in Health, Safety and Environmental Management in Oman)

The level of education provided by the course is appropriate to those who will eventually hold senior positions within commerce, public service or industry. Throughout the course emphasis is placed on self-motivation, independent critical thinking, analytical depth and practical application. The aims of the course are:

An optional work placement period with a host company in a health, safety or environment related role allows students an opportunity to further apply and consolidate their knowledge. Successful completion of this period leads to a Certificate or Diploma of Higher Education that states ‘…..with Industrial Placement’.

Completion of the course will allow you to enter the health, safety and environmental management professions with excellent career prospects, and will also open up many other career options in other industry, commerce or public service. This course prepares graduates to enter organizations as Health and Safety Manager, HSE Officer, HSE Advisor, Health and Safety Auditor, Environmental Advisor and Manager, Risk Assessor, Environmental Auditor. The programme also enables graduates to continue in higher education to follow post-graduate studies.

The College offers courses leading to qualifications from the British Affiliated University, University of Central Lancashire. British qualifications are generally recognized throughout the world but it is important to know the equivalence with your local qualifications. In particular, British universities often offer Bachelor Degrees (with Honours).
